View Full Version : HPWS Day 00

I have completed my research for the upcoming tournament but confidence is low based on raw data from recent race meets. Bad weather at almost all ongoing meets has disrupted the normal flow of racing. This not only causes gaps in the schedule due to cancellation or off-tracks, but messes up the training cycle, workouts and normal layoff patterns for horses.

The upside is that this probably increases the volatiilty and field size resulting in more longshot winners. Looks like good weather this week at most venues, so we should see a lot of horses returning to training and racing that have been laid up by weather lately.

I worked on a new spreadsheet for this tournament that i hope will speed the decision process and will certainly adapt into HTR2 later if it is beneficial. Here is my thought process -->

We have great identifiers for positive longshot impact factors in HTR ($ and $$ for instance). With large, wide-open fields though, the decision process is often overwhelmed by sheer numbers of these horses. Hardly enough tournament ammo to play them all, even if the odds are generous. Not to mention we only have a matter of minutes to decide to pull the trigger.

My idea was to combine dozens of negative elements from the Robot, Trainer stats. and the Light Bulb into a screen that presents all the horses in a single glance. That could get real busy with some horses having a 10 or more comments: "chronic loser", "cold Trainer", "Weak PED", "Trainer weak with Lay 90+", etc etc etc

So, my spreadsheet numerizes the negatives and provides me with a master listing. It also allows me to improvise on some items. I'll explain both below. Sample field =

HorseA 03 07
HorseB 03 06 09 15 22 24 27 29
HorseC 01 03 99

I get to see the whole field listed together and these numbers identify certain negative or suspicious characteristics. Example, 03 = No Wins or 2nds from 4 or more tries at today's Track/Surface.

Cannot possibly use up that much space for one comment within HTR. So it was necessary to categorize all the items and refer to a master listing for what '03' refers to, but i'm getting used to it quickly and memorizing them. A great benefit here is that perhaps all the horses have the same negative (as above with 03); so in this context, it doesn't mean anything and may have more to do with the conditions of the race.

I improvised on some of the negatives as well. For example, a Turf Stakes horse with a 365-day layoff is not at all a negative. But a 3yr with 180-day layoff is definitely suspicious. So i working on variations, rather than just a generic flag for nLAY > 365, for example.

The negatives that pop up for favorites are especially critical. A strong opinion to beat the chalk is paramount to making a solid longshot play. So part of this process is to see when the low odds runners are vulnerable and have multiple challenges to overcome.

The HTR2' Light Bulb is terrric for this purpose. The problem is time lag though, same as with reading the Racing Form. After scouring through a bunch of horses and reading all the pros and cons for each runner, i have pretty much forgotten what i read earlier and have to keep going back over them again and again. This new list ends that problem and all the horses are compared together. Also, the Light Bulb doesn't list the Trainer Stats negatives and some of the Robot2 negatives due to space limitations. This new sheet overcomes that as well and gets it all combined.

Tournaments place a premium on making decisions in a hurry. I'm hopiong this will help. I'll let you know how this works out.

It looks like the lineup will use six tracks on Thursday because HAW and FG are dark that day. I presume that FG won't be used on Friday (they have a night program) but HAW will be added and then FG on Saturday for the full complement of 8.

I presume that this spreadsheet is not something that will be available for this tournament but in the future?

I am new to HTR but in my previous life in order to facilitate my review I ignored all races with small fields either with the entries or after scratches, so for example on Thursday there are 53 races scheduled at these six tracks and 40 of them have more than 7 runners entered (of course this will be reduced after scratches) and that means that, out of the subgroup based on field size, we will have to play one of every 2.67 races on average (which is a pretty high average).

This element of targeting my handicapping resources my become slightly less critical with the tools you provide and my general plan was to begin by filtering low Vi races and then using some of the spot plays I have developed to focus my attention. If a spreadsheet like this was available I would certainly put it to use.

Thanks Bob and BobD

BobD - yes, several people have already asked me for the new readout, i'll see if i can ad lib it into the KM screen for now and offer it it up strictly as an Alpha-Test (not even worthy of a beta-test yet, since it is completely virgin and i have no feedback whatsoever). Will make another announcement tomorrow.

FG scheduled to start at 3pm on Friday PST. So it will be interesting to see if Orleans will use it in the contest. Not likely with budget and labor constraints past 6pm.

Best of luck to everyone in Vegas the next couple of days!

Ken,

looking forward to haring how you new approach of a "master listing" works out

Ken, was there a reason why you listed negatives vs a list of positives?:)

If you started using Access you wouldn't have this problem!!! LOL!!! :D:D:D

On a serious note, looks like a great idea!

The KM screen or Program Screen highlights the key positive factors in HTR really well. I went for 100% negatives because they are harder to quantify and label for a whole field, and they appear on so many different screens in HTR. So by placing the negative list right below the current KM screen, i'll have a neat list of excuses when i lose!

I have to type up the master list so you can cross-reference the numbered items. I'll send a separate HTR version to Rick before i leave for Vegas (Thurs morning) and everyone can try it. I'll call it HTRK and you must use it separately from the regular software as it might have bugs and won't print out properly.

This is literally a work in progress (going on right this minute) and a brand new baby, so bear with me. Lots of changes are possible later. But necessity is the mother of invention, and as i prepared for this tournament, i needed somthing that would quickly highlight problems with any horse.

Great idea Ken. I have been playing with a positive and negative score for each horse. It might sound simple at first, but quantifying when and where things are negative is probably a lifetime work.

Hope your work pays off in Vegas and thanks for including us in the birth of your new "baby".

Ken,

I love the theory! Frankly, I'd rather know the negatives than the positives ...

Neat idea!

It’s a delicate balancing act as Ken knows better then anyone. We look for negatives (“deal breakers”) in short prices and isolated positives (“upside”) in bombs.

With each positive we stack on top of each other; unfortunately the more people we invite to the clam bake. The more negatives we identify, the more our hit rate resembles Gupta’s poker playing :D and / or our prices soar.

It takes a VERY clever player / programmer to balance the ‘yin and yang’ of overlay vs. occurrence and fortunately...we subscribe to the best.

Ken

I hope that you can keep us access and excell players in the back of your mind and provide a way to export the "numbers" into our real time queries and reports that we use for daily play.

km
17th February 2010, 11:25.39 AM
Sure will Mike - will add the numbers to the Export for summer update, whatever we come up with by then. The HX4 will have some major additions for the seminar.

HTRK has been sent to Rick, he'll make an announcement here. You can retrieve it in the Subscriber Zone only along with the PDF Master List that identifies the numbers. The HTRK defaults to the KM Screen and the Negative list appears below the main section. You'll notice some improv items on the screen also.

Note: the "Pain" column totals the negatives into a score, is not related to the list, but for my reference at the contest, along with "Tourney Play?" comment for $ and $$ horses that have a low Pain rating.

Big disclaimer here: this is an Alpha-Test, right out of the oven, still too hot to eat, so accept that it may not be 100% finished or working properly.

HTRK.exe is up for download in the Subscriber Zone at this link only http://htr.horsedata.com/HTR_Protected/dnl/HTRK.exe

You can download the HTRK Master List pdf at http://homebased2.com/km/pdf/HTRK_MasterList.pdf

You can save HTRK to C:\htr and then right click on the file name and click on Send To and click on Desktop (create shortcut).

Like Ken said, this is even a pre-beta version. The icon is the same and the initial splash screen says HTR2.

the 86 and 88 are on purpose to get attention
dont have 88 negative items yet!

we have 500 points on our best ticket

so far have talked to AlanN , Daven and BobG

km
18th February 2010, 05:48.47 PM
current leader at about 1200 points

no final headcount yet but 600 is a good estimate and with far fewer free quallies this year they probably matched the paid total from last year still i have to think it is a dissapointing turnout

nevertheless the room is lively and the betting lines are long so it may be a success from that standpoint

FG will be used in the contest on Friday despite the late post

hit bomb at SA race 5 on a zero ticket worth a whopping 700 points or so for the solo $$ and Fit and Ready play
im hoping other HTR hit it too
