Leave your comments on this thread if you want to take an early look at the ROBOT2. This way, i won't get a 50 emails for the same problem if everyone reports it at once.
Rick will notify when the software is ready to download and there is a brief "read me" sheet to get you started.
Keep in mind that a beta-test means == "as is" , many functions don't work yet. But you can use the QuickTest, LearnAll and most aspects of SpotPlay saving and extraction. Give me your comments on the interface.
Up at the top left, there is a race and date selector. Use this to change the date for pulling a spot play (GET PLAYS). Tryout the various filters and angles and system options.
thank you for the help and advice

2 problems on my end. Test days only works on 365 day cycle. Track selection only works on all tracks. If you try individual tracks in just keeps on going "forever".
Too hard to try and test factors when you have to wait for the 365 day cycle and all tracks.
Lot's of bells and whistles to keep busy

I think I need help. I downloaded to htr. But when I open htr2 its not there. I tried "search' and it says robot2 is in C:// htr. What have I done wrong? I have tried downloading it acouple of times-same result. Please help. Thanks.

Jack you have mis-match there. That looks like it is saving to your root C directory and a file named HTR.
Download it again, choose Local Drive C, then select HTR folder from the list and dbl-click on it. Then click SAVE.
You need the file in your C:\HTR folder.
If you can't get it, Rick might be able to produce an installation package for it using Install Shield.

Thanks for your answer Ken. The file is now in my c:\htr folder. When I open the folder it is there, double click on it within the folder it opens and works ok. But it is not in my htr2 program. Should it be in my htr2 prog main screen alongside my old robot? Thanks.

Jack,
ROBOT2.EXE is a separate program and will not show up in HTR2.
Create a desktop icon for ROBOT2. Right click on the ROBOT2.EXE file name, select Send to, and select Desktop.

Ken,
I LOVE IT!!
I may not be going out for New Year's Eve. I may be glued to my new Christmas gift, Robot II.
So far,
The set time zone does not fully display.
The change folder works, but does not hold on restart.
At Aqu, I get results for Artf sprint and artf route. Could that be inner track?

Hi Ken,
Like the modular approach to Robot2 and the addition of the new angles to test. Good Stuff !!!
Noticed a few things:
--Big Drop in Claim price is picking up non-claiming races. For example on Dec 31st, at Santa Anita races 6 and 7 were flagging horses in ALW and STK races.
-- When switching to the Handicap or View a race screen the Print Specs button stays in view.
-- Rank Factors screen view spacing seems odd. Spacing between the 2nd and 3rd column seems a little wide. Screen Res is 1024X768
Question on the Bid, Hung factor -- Is that searching the comments for Bid Hung or are you using beaten lengths and Call positions to determine this ?
Happy New year,
Tom

Ken,
1152x864 or higher sizing would be much better as it would make everything uniform with the rest of HTR.
When using other Robot in 1024x768 results are printed and viewed doubled spaced which is pretty hard to read.
Will also have sizing problem with notebook as resolation must be set at 1280x800 as per mfg.

thanks for the comments, i have fixed all the issue that were reported yesterday and sent a Jan 3 version to Rick. This should get the screen resolution under control David
TomV - thx
"bid but hung" is my own set of criteria, with a little help from DanG, and it can be adjusted, i'll list it in the newsletter, track commentators will mention the words in their chart calls but that would be too ambiguous to try and extract from text.
Yes, the Alw/Stk category includes OCL races, so horses that were in those races for a tag are then extracted for "1st for tag" if this was the first time they have been offered, even though it is not a claiming race per se. This could apply to other types of races most often classified in the Alw category. Think of this as a hidden gem (or negative) for the 1st in a claimer from OCL, as few people would ever notice those.
I'll straighten out the screen items over time - growing pains - these beta tests really help

Ken,
I ran a quick run of FTS in the last 90 days for MSW/MCL with no other filters.
331 runners showed up as stretchouts. The same number of runners in routes. However, none of the 3315 runners in sprints were listed as turnbacks.
I am not sure what behavior you want but the 331 debut routers appear to me as potentially skewing the results for stretchouts in other queries.

The best just got better. The ease of use and understanding are particularly impressive to someone who usually needs help just figuring out the download process.
The one item I noticed which is part of Learn All in Robot I and doesn't seem to be included in the Robot II results is a breakdown in terms of the days since last race.

Ken, not sure if this is easy or hard but I'll ask nonetheless. In the current Robot screen there is a button "Current Race" that enables you to set parameters for a robot run based on the conditions of a specific race. That was nice because you could use that as a starting point for a test. There is also a button in Robot 2 for "Handicap or View A Race". Is there anyway that you could tie the race selected into a similar "Current Race" button so you could run a robot "learn all" based on specific parameters for a race without having to enter them individually in the Race Filters part of Robot 2?

I am running 1440X900 on my laptop and the display is fine.
One thing though, could you put the criteria used in the new robot on the bottom or top of the stats display window like the old robot has?
I like to screen capture and store in an indexed file by track/dist/etc and I am too lazy to type in the criteria now.
If there is a tech reason why it's not displayed then no big deal.

Stu - there is a race filter for 2yr and 3yr (only) races, but i'm guessing you want to locate 3yr in an older field or something? I'll think about it, but i'm not sure it has much value - tell me what you data you want to glean from this. There is a new Range Filter that may prove more useful = "Number of Lifetime STarts" - i'll talk it about more in the newsletter

The types of things that I was thinking about:
a) What is the win percentage for 6 year olds and up in Maiden races at say MNR?
b) Can I eliminate 9yo+ runners from Allowance races at Belmont? Hawthorne? Will Rogers?
c) Do 3yo or 4yo+ have a better success at marathon races?
d) Do younger horses win at a greater percentage than older when returning from a 6mo layoff?

The old Robot manual is useful for learning the new one because many of the filters and testing reports are the same, the new Robot uses a modular approach to get at the filters, the old one smooshed everything onto one screen.

Andy, the Spot Play mechanism is designed to safeguard your plays without every over-writing.
But with a little housekeeping you can do almost anything =
example, suppose i have spot plays 1-2-8-9 on my list
i want #8 to go to slot # 3
i bring Spot Play #8 and pull it out, now i click SAVE SPOT PLAY and it automatically saves it to # 3
then i delete # 8 and now i have 1-2-3-9, then i move # 9 to slot # 4 the same way
This tight method of auto save is far safer in the long run for you and the software to hold in memory rather than allowing the user to manipulate them with Windows and possibly mess up the entire thing!

Ken,
Is they any way that we can select the spot play number that we want to use.
The reason is that I group plays by different groups and different tracks with some in the 20's, 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's. I think it is very important that we can select what number the spot play is as more and more are developed.
(Examples I have all my Aqu. spot plays listed in the 50's. I also have my combination plays which combine 2 or more spot plays together listed under 90's.)
Please.:):)

On the Learn All screen, where it refers to Odds < 3/1, is that MLO or is that the actual odds?
Rick
6th January 2009, 11:37.01 AM
David,
You should be able to do what you want using Windows Explorer or a program like xplorer2.
It looks like all the Robot II spot plays have names ranging from 001.HSP to 999.HSP.
After you have created your spot plays just close ROBOT2 and open Windows Explorer and rename your spot play which number you would like.
The next time you create a spot play Robot II will use the first available number starting at 001.
That's if km can't come up with a way to help you.

Chuck - yes, Tote odds unless you don't have the chart, then defaults to MLO, same with "Favorites"
David - i want to leave the current Robot2 saving method in place as it is very "Safe" for both user and software to record spot plays. You can manipulate as Rick suggests or as I suggest in the other thread above =
Let's say you have spot22 and want it in spot 5
Bring up the current Spot #5, pull it and Save it again to another slot. Now delete # 5
Now bring up #22 and Save it again - it will go into #5 and you can delete #22

I found the need to eliminate turn backs but there does not seem to be a way to do it. Here is my suggestion: How about a column on the Angles page that would be for "No" of the cooresponding row. IE a box beside turn backs that would be labled "No" and would mean no turnbacks. You could do it for each of the items on the angles page. I'm sure this is a programming nightmare.
The reason I suggest this is that beside the turnbacks, I've also wanted to eliminate Cramer double advantage figs.

Chuck, maybe in summer update i'll add the items from the Robot2 into HX4 and then you can work with it in db sorry we donm't want to turn the Robot into a full blown database with every permutation of every factor . Other people have requested NOT Fr1= 4, or Fr3 = 3 and 7, etc.
I can add only so much and then it becomes overwhelming. When dealing with something like NOT Cramer Dbl Adv would be marginally useful since 99.9% of the horses are already in that category.
Bob - defiinetely will add "favorites" to the track selection list, i'm working on various approaches to make it easier to pop up a single track rather than requiring the user to clear the list and then scroll down to find one track - it's a pain for me too - i'm always looking for easier ways :)

To exit just click one of the filter buttons. This would be the same as in the old one as leaving the results screen and returning to the filters. It just takes some getting used to, but you can always move on with any screen by clicking another button.
One good suggestion was to allow the result screen to be recalled after posted. I'll take care of that.

Looking good. :) If you are still taking suggestions I would like to add some:
- In the Spot Play Desktop area, have an option to remove duplicates, so that when results come up when clicking on Get All My Plays, the Plays/Bets/Wins/ITM/ROI is displayed just for those horses and not duplicates of them.
- Also in the Get All My Plays results, add the W/P profit item that the old robot had.
All in all, its a lot nicer than the old robot. Great job!

9th January 2009, 07:03.06 PM
thanks for catching those boo-boos Rick, i'll fix it for the next update
The track selection is the primary key to speeding up the Robot. A single track goes much faster than any other test because only the files for that one track are brought into memory initially and the other files are never loaded for processing.
When ALL tracks are processed, every single file in the folder has to be opened and that takes a lot of time.
Another way to speed up the Robot is to de-select some aspects on the RACE FILTERS, such as eliminating maiden races or grass and wet. The Robot will inspect the race conditions initially and skip the races that don't match the race criteria befoe it must examine all the horses in the race.
dehere
10th January 2009, 01:48.48 PM
An observation and a question.
Observation - When I run the mid-price plays (8/1 and up) and LS plays (20/1 and up), I am finding that very seldom (almost never) are any of the races producing such winners Chaos or Rule of 50 races. That seems very unlikely - or at least a surprise - by me as I often look for such races as a starting point in my handicapping for a greater likelihood of producing long shot winners. Is anyone else seeing this? Am I doing something wrong? Does this surprise anyone else?
Questions (aside from those last three) - The break point in the Robot2 is 3 and up for older horses. However, actual race conditions most often are at 4 and up. What's up with that?
Question 2 - For races that are Allowance/Optional Claiming Races - what is the category in Robot2 that covers those - Allowance, Claiming or, perhaps, both?
km
10th January 2009, 02:51.13 PM
These are all very good questions Dehere =
3up/4up are together in the Robot - any races open to older horses,
this time of year 3yr will not involved in the older sample
OCL = Alw/Stk category
Use EPR range to get more defined splits in class rather than descriptive class types.
The Robot was not designed to include every nuance of age/class on purpose, there would be so many checkboxes that it would be insufferable to work with it. Splitting sample sizes would not help your cause anyway as profitable play comes from finding a pattern of factors first and foremost.
As far as the Chaos/Rule50 not producing prices - it is, what is , I wrote about this in the newsletter this month, if there ain't no fish in that poind - go fishin somewhere else :)
You may be finding something deeper though, perhaps the number of high priced winners is on the decline. I noticed in my all burger samples this month that favorites won 35% of the races in 2008
Chaos and Rule50 are race type identifiers only, they are not computed factors, just a subset of races that has low predictability for the (K) and other ratings. They rarely produce reliable patterns of outcomes and that could include both chalk and longshots.
The price plays have patterns to be sure, it's just getting harder to uncover them. So keep digging and you might hit paydirt while everyone else is looking in the wrong place.

You can run ROBOT2.EXE from the Desktop and change the directory to c:\htr and it runs the races.
But if you create a shortcut to the ROBOT2.EXE file on the Desktop and change the start in directory in the icon it gives you the resize error.
Do you have SP1 installed for Vista?

oops - I had the short cut going the wrong direction. I will try it again on my personal laptop when I get off work

the executable is on the desktop
within the c:\htr folder I have set up a shortcut to the executable
when I run the shortcut, it complains:
"Current Directory (Folder) Is C:\USERS\SPSLAGLE\DESKTOP"
I am more of a unix guy than windows but I am certain that I have all of required packs, patches, and updates on my machine as it is configured to grab them every Tuesday morning.
I hate to be difficult but this behavior didn't happen with the old robot, or beta january 3rd and earlier.

I would put the shortcut on the desktop.
You have to right click on the icon and change the path of the start in to C:\htr
If that doesn't work I would try renaming the C:\htr to something like c:\htr2
I would test to see if ROBOT2 would run there.
You could then try creating a new C:\htr add a few races and see if ROBOT2 will run in there.
When something isn't working right you just have to see what will work. Just having running from the desktop may be the simplest solution for now.

Ken,
Would it be possible to add the favorite's & save to favorite's tracks feature as I have 49 spot plays that I'm moving over.
To enter the many different tracks that I run would take much less time with these two features.
Thank You,
David

A question and a comment
First, in the PAC and PER categores there are many more ties than in others. How are these reflected in the Robot? Does it take into account the ties so that two or three horses would qualify in the ROBOT sample under a PAC or PER-2 scenario?
Second, Cramer Double Speed Advantage doesn't seem to be coming up much often. I ran an all-burger test on my tracks (granted I don't have all of them but I get the major tracks and many of the minor ones.) and it came up with just 136 instances, only 75 on fast dirt.
Seems like a pretty small sample to take up a prized spot on the Robot which could go for something a bit more common/useful.

Never mind -- i forgot I turned the days back switch to only 110 days -- less than 100 really since it was for 2008 only. That translates to a total of 544 Cramer DA races. To me, still not very useful but certainly a far cry from 136 and leaves much more room for debate. So forget I said anything.:o

David - yes, i'll spruce up the track selection screen and include a 'favs' list.

re: PAC-PER ties; common because they are whole numbers, not decimal
Ties are common with lots of data items. For example; FTS are always clustered in the same races, rarely just one per race.
This is why win% is not viable in those cases. However, ROI is still useful because it is the result of blindly betting $1 on every one of them. I.V. is the key to understanding though, as it takes into account the number of horses that qualify for that factor and the field size and is not distorted by ties.
AvgM (Average Win Mutuel) = is also a good one to look at with multiple ties, as it reflects the typical win price for a winner in that category.

Ken, when using "Get all my plays" it includes races with no results in the ROI computations at the bottom of the page. Also the sorting sometimes is a bit off. You might have a couple of LRL-02 together and then the rest of LRL-02 after LRL-08. I am looking at Jan 15th.

Ken,
I like your Full Card grades so much I was wondering if it is too late to include a search option for them on the Robot II......:o
I guess I will never learn to appreciate what you have already done for us...
but I DO!
Thanks again,

Ken,
Was there are reason you took out the Class + and Class - from the new robot? I have found that taking out Class - horses from non-maiden races is a great throw-away for spot plays. Having a "No Class- horses" button would be great.

I tossed Class (+)(-) from Robot II because they are too numerous and not that useful
But i like your idea Mike, a "bad class" filter - i'll work on it
Other requests include Class Rise and DRop according to the SOR-EPR ratio, and someone suggested big "purse drop/rise" as in the trainer stats. So there are a lot of different Class methods i can test. Whichever works the best (or has the most negative impact) i'll get it in there for sure.

Thanks Ken.
One more question. I did a check on one of my spot plays in the new robot. One of the criteria is Ped >=200 but in the bad Pedigree field, I got 11 horses. What is the criteria for "Bad Ped"?

Check Jan/Feb 2009 newsletter page 6, two criteria involved in "Bad PED"

Ken - a bit ago I asked about having a "Current Race" button in the new Robot program so we could quickly grab the conditions of a race that we were looking at in the "Handicap or View a Race" screen. I think you said that you would add such a thing. Is it in the current Robot2 program and I am missing it? Or would it be possible to get something in advance of the NHC contest this week?

Dehere - use the Modeler in MaxVel or the Current Race button in HTR2 Robot for now, i have too much on my plate with Robot 2 to get that done in a hurry - sorry - it will be added eventually
Dan - thanks!

no problem Ken - i suspect that once you run the scratch feature in HTR - the horses will still be gone when you do the robot. Haven't checked but I suspect that that is the case.

Yes on the Scratches - they are picked up by all HTR programs
I'll get that Auto Scratch button into Robot II in the future also

A lot of my time in assorted HTR screens seems to be spent UN-checking a lot of boxes.
How about more "Clear All" buttons, or having a "Clear Everything in this CATEGORY" button?

Posh and Dog, will do on those fixes and additions
Bill, you probably need to download the latest version of Robot2 , i think the Time Zone is ok and it should have worked anyway except for the new GMT settings
be aware that if you change folders, your Time Zone setting is picked up in the new folder and that may be the issue. For example, if set my timezone to GMT in my HTR folder, but change folders to work in my 2008Races folder, my Time Zone will be the last one used in the 2008 folder and it won't show the GMT from the other location. Also, if the Time Zone is altered in HTR2 or MaxVel, it changes in all 3 programs.

I'm rather new to HTR but am having a good time with it. In doing a spot play with Robot II, on the range filters screen, I set a range of 97 to 107 and did check the box. When I pull the spot play later, the specs screen shows a (K) range of 80-107. I have to manually change the lower limit by adjusting the lower limit arrow. It always resets to 80 even though I saved it with 97-107.
Great program.

thanks Jake, you caught a bug that was mixing up the Wk Low and the K Low ranges (so both will have quirks). I have fixed it and will put up a new version this week with the correction after i take care of a few other errors and additions. Sorry about that,

Ken, is this bug affecting the ped range also, my spot play set at 200 minimum resets to 300 minimum after I close down. Have tried it a few times, same thing. Thanks, a fantastic program. Jack.
