Congratulations to Mr. Dutrow & IEAH for another great victory with Frost Giant who paid $82.00 to win in Saturday's $400,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont.

Despite all the negative press & boasting one thing that still remains true is that Rick Dutrow Jr. is among the great trainers in the game today, period.

Agreed David in the sense his talent is undeniable. Just as his father before him and its remarkable how similar they are in personality except that Jr. seems more self destructive.

Articles like this just aren’t written by the beloved trainers in the game. Somehow I can’t picture Bill Mott in the press calling Contessa a “clown and a jerk”.

Rick Dutrow calls fellow horse trainer Gary Contessa a cheater

BY JERRY BOSSERT

During a press conference outside his barn at Aqueduct, Dutrow was explaining how he made an honest mistake that resulted in an excess amount of the steroid Clenbuterol in one of his horses the day before Big Brown won the Kentucky Derby.

Dutrow, 48, said it would be ideal for the sport to have a national drug policy so everyone could race on the same playing field. And he blamed veterinarians for giving other trainers an advantage.

"If you can stop the vets from coming in here, we're still going to be around winning at the same rate and we'll still be going good," he said. "Then you have to look at things like this. How does Oscar Barrera go from winning no races for 30 years and then he becomes the best trainer that's ever trained horses for two years, and then they stop him and he goes 0-for-140. Same thing with Gasper Moschera. Where is he at? How did he become the man in New York by laying carpet and then they stop him and he gets out of the game.

"Pete Ferriola. Juan Serey. You look at this jerk down here Contessa. How does he set records? How does he do it? Come on, man. If everything is the same playing field, we're going to do as good if not better than anybody."

The first four names Dutrow mentioned were leading trainers in New York, and Contessa has been the leading trainer the last two years and tops the standings again this year. Last year, Contessa set a record when he saddled 159 winners at the three New York Racing Association tracks - Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga.

"The guy is in recovery," a stunned Contessa said in response. "It's bizarre. I won't lower myself to his level to say something about him."

Contessa, 50, said this isn't the first time Dutrow has taken a shot at him. "After (Dutrow) won a Grade I race with Silver Train he called me a clown during the post-race interview."

Contessa believes that since he has become aggressive in the claiming game four years ago, he has hurt Dutrow's business.

Dutrow was the leading trainer in New York in 2001 and 2002 but has finished second behind Contessa the last two years.

"He's a jealous guy because he used to have the claiming game all to himself," Contessa said.

Contessa, a Long Island product, was particularly upset with Dutrow when the spotlight was on the trainer during Big Brown's failed Triple Crown run.

"I shuddered every time he opened his big mouth," Contessa said. "He never says anything intelligent. As a spokesperson he's done more damage to the game than anyone."

"I don't use steroids and I know exactly why I do not use steroids," added Contessa, referring to Dutrow, who has admitted to using the steroid Winstrol on his horses but has also said he doesn't know why. "I'm still waiting for him to say something intelligent because it still hasn't happened. He's a moron."

Dan,

It is possible that Contessa is a jerk which I have also heard from friends that own and race in New York & New Jersey & Dutrow is just calling it as he see's it.

We all know that this game is very competitive with a lot of jealousy at all levels.

As far as I'm concerned I don't care what Dutrow say's or does as long as he keeps winning races which as far as my understand goes is the main objective of a trainer.

This game would be a lot better off if we had more colorful characters like Dutrow, at the very least he gives us something to write about and have an opinion about.

IEAH would be completely nuts to think they could ever find a trainer that could win 24 per cent of the time and put up with their interference at the same time.

They need a character like Dutrow, the same way that Dutrow needs them. It is a perfect fit.

BTW: I personally agree with the statements that he made about the trainers he named in his press conference.

Fair points David;

I was trying to address the ‘why me aspect of Dutrow's press conference. When you go through life throwing around “cheat, jerk, clown” in the press, don’t act shocked when the same comes at you from all angles.

Agreed; more colorful characters is good for our game and far worse is spoken on the backside, dugouts and locker rooms as we know. Also at the water cooler of every major business for that matter.

To your point; I heard 1st hand Willard Proctor call Wayne Lukas every derogatory name you could imagine and the only difference was there wasn’t a microphone around when he was talking.

Personally, I disagree. I'd like to think that the sport is a bit classier than winning at all costs.

This game is just like wall street, it is all about the money. It could not survive if it was not about the money.

It is pretty tough to buy a loaf of bread with a pocketful of class.

Not exactly ‘the sport of king’s press, but racing is certainly staying in the NY papers. The infamous “Gas-Man” fires back at Babe going old school NY invoking The Godfather. The only question remaining is who will turn out to be Fredo in this soap opera.

MOSCHERA FIRES BACK AT DUTROW

By ED FOUNTAINE

When Gasper Moschera was one of the top horsemen in New York, winning six straight training titles (1993-98), he always spoke his mind. So after Moschera, 66, who retired in 2002, read in Saturday's Post that Rick Dutrow Jr., the trainer of Big Brown, basically accused him and several others of "juicing" their horses, the "Gasman" wanted to set the record straight.

"I never had a positive (in a 25-year career) so I don't like the idea he's talking like that," Moschera told The Post. "I take that as an insult, him putting me in that category. That's one of the reasons I got out of the business, because they made Lasix legal, and that opened the door for all the drugs. Ever since then, nothing was the same.

"Dutrow, they shouldn't test his horses, they should test him. Here's a guy that God blessed him, gave him a talent, and here he is throwing it out the window, talking negative about people. Instead of being grateful and thanking God for what he's got, he's acting like a real [jerk].

"And it's all going to be taken away from him," Moschera continued. "It will take time, but it will all be taken away. When you don't have nothing, and it's taken away, you don't miss nothing. But when you have everything - money, success - and it's taken away, you want to jump off a bridge.

"I have no problem with Dutrow. I wish him all the luck. But he should thank God, and shut his mouth. He talks like a jerk, but he can talk intelligent, too. He's got a brain, but it's all being thrown away. I don't know how his owners stay with him.

"He should watch 'The Godfather,' and he'll learn about what to say and what not to say. Just because you don't like someone, don't let them know it. Never let anybody outside the family know what you're thinking."

Yeah, Dutrow ran a horse on Friday at Belmont and then shipped him to Monmouth to run on Sunday and the horse was vanned off, not something that racing needs right now.
The gas man is right, he should be thankful. Once the good horses leave and they will, you're only left with your friends and right now it doesn't look like he have any.
