Vic,
open the table (in design view) and you can pic the fields you want to index(hold control then click for more than one) then you can select Index field or the little light bulb. Then you save the table. If you have dups it won't let you save.
Be careful...to many indexes can slow you down...Donnie or Mike can address this a little better than me.

One of my queries contains two fields from impact and one from ALL_MSA. I indexed each of these specifying duplicates OK. The query is still very slow. Maybe I should unlink the tables. How is this done? Or, what is the proceedure for combining the tables instead of linking them? As they are now.

Victor,
I would not recommend unlinking tables; it limits what you can do.
If you want to create a master table, since I just did this a few weeks ago, if you have Access2000 or up, I can send you my templates and queries for joining. I can send you the whole thing.
If you have Access97 I can send and you can import tables and queries. When I convert to Access97 all the Import Specifications are lost.
Let me know if you want and incluce email address.
