In the for what its worth department:
Monday one of my hard disk starting acting up. MS was doing a Check Disk at start up and fixing and deleting at its pleasure.
Tueday MS was doing the same thing so decided I better figure out which disk it was and try to save what I could.
Initially I could access the disk using Windows Explorer and was able to copy some stuff to another disk. Some stuff I couldn't copy.
After a while I couldn't get any directory using Windows Explorer so I started looking for a program that might help me save some more files.
At first I tried Recover My Files but after running about 2 hours it looked like it had only covered less than 10% of the 160 GB disk.
I then tried File Scavenger. In about an hour it ran through the whole disk and gave me a list of what it found. It also recovered files I had deleted.
