not tech related....definitely not horseracing....

Any recommendations from anyone concerning a new stereo system speaker package? Just purchased a new Denon receiver with 7.1 Surround, and want to spend no more than about $1000 on speakers. One major hurdle....the room the system is going into is our family room....looks like a hunting lodge.....wooden walls, wooden ceiling, only one wall that is actually exposed drywall. I would imagine there is some major damping that is going to be experienced. Wonder if anyone can steer me the right way?

Thanks in advance!

Question ... with 7.1, only want stereo? I've just put in a Denon, the 4806, and chose the Definitive Technology bipolar speakers ... outstanding ... they have several price levels. A rule of thumb that I've heard and believe in is to spend at least half as much on the audio as you do on the video. Anyway, just one guy's opinion.

All sorts of decisions here. If you're going the full 7.1 or 6.1, gonna take a fair amount of speakers plus a sub

I went thru all of these decisons when redoing a home therater year before last. I ended up with some on wall ( fronts ) and in-ceiling ( rears ) by NHT. My setup is 6.1 and we love it.

The price range will dictate of course

I would strongly recommend the following forum. I would say it's THE place to try on the net. There is a dedicated speaker section in the forum. I'm sure you will get lots of info there

I have had surround sound for years and we love it. Adding a subwoofer was a big improvement. There seems to be more options now.

QRick- thanks for the link...yes, we hope to go the full 7.1. I purchased a Denon AVR-3805, and plan to utilize it to it's fullest....setting up one zone in the family room for movies, one in the kitchen for cooking, and one on the back porch fer whittlin'. I have sourced a set of speakers that I have found many rave reviews about....wondering if anyone here has heard them live? They are called Orbs.... http://www.orbaudio.com .
Seems like a lot of independant message boards have some true followers of these tiny beauties....a lot of people say they put the Bose speakers to shame, at a lot less money than you would pay for Bose. Would love to hear from anyone who may have a set of these!
Thanks for the input from all!

not real familiar w/the orbs but sounds like your on the right track. I would ask over at the AVS forum for opinions, sure you'll get plenty. It's a really busy forum. My system is 6.1 w/ a sub that can/did literally set a car alarm off when cranked up!! We really enjoy entire system. In particular the rear speakers really seem to shine when watching/listening to DTS encoded material or listening to "SACD" cd's. Not many sacd's out there, but well worth picking up a few assuming your dvd player handles the format. RE: Bose. You will find them almost universally panned everywhere among those that know. Very well marketed, but they pale in comparison to others. "Friends don't let friends buy Bose!" seems to be the common motto

cool...thanks for the feedback Qh.....

One lady who bought a set of the orbs said she had a cat who HATED thunderstorms....when they rented the movie The Day After Tomorrow, when the storms started, the cat went berzerk! Don't know that I want our car alarm going off, but wouldn't mind not seeing the cats as often!! :D :D
