On my backup computer running W98 I'm able to import .txt files into Access97, but on my primary machine with W2k, the only file types being allowed for import are Microsoft Access (*.mdb, etc.) and ODBC Databases. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office, as well as the Access and Data Access components, and have run the Data Access Pack utility. Anyone have any other suggestions?

This is from my "Mastering MS Office 2000" book:
Importing Data
To import external data, choose File > Get External Data > Import to open the Import dialog box (shown in Figure 30.28). Click the Files Of Type drop-down arrow to select the type of file you want to import. Select the file and then click Import. Not all import file types are included in a Typical install. If the file type you want is not listed, you can install its import filter from your Office 2000 CD-ROM.
Hope that helps a little.

Nothing has helped. So after 2 days days of trying, I'll be buying Office 2000 today (the OEM full version so I can delete Office 97). I went with W2k on my new computer because it's more stable than W98 and 2 service packs are out so it should be relatively bug free. But it does appear to have backwards compatability problems. (Two different rodents won't work under DOS, so I'm limited to keyboard action.) Until Ken gets the Windows versions of everything done, it looks like W98 or ME are the best operating systems to use.

Bernie, I use Win2000 and Access 97 and import text files all the time. Don't think buying Access 2000 will help.

Just looked at my db again and in the import window, everything is listed .mda, .txt , excel etc.. I just don't think you have the other ones installed.

One more thing, run your office CD and select add/remove components.
Make sure these are checked:
Office Tools
Data Access
Converter and Filters

Fred4Now,
The problem is the other formats won't install. I've checked everything under all the items you mentioned, but the other stuff still doesn't show up. Thanks for the suggestions though. I may just go to OfficeXP and run in Access2000 mode. Has anyone had any problems doing that?

My partner gave me Office Suite 2000 a year and a half ago.
I just installed the first of four cd's, that one had word, excel, access on it.
I am running on Win 98.
Zero problems so far. I like 2000 'cause you can't double enter data without being stupid, it warns you before you do.
Later,
Carl
