My first post, and I'm afraid it's not even remotely related to the fine program this forum is about.

I need HELP!!!

I've purchased a new computer, and am going thru all the usual pain that Microsoft enjoys inflicting. I've got most everything happening, but I can't get into the betting screens at either Pinnacle or Betehorse. When I log into the "tracks" screen at Pinnacle, I get the normal headings that appear at the top of the page...but the betting menu won't load (I just get an empty box with an "X" in the upper lefthand corner. When I get to the betting screen on Betehorse, it asks me to download a Java module; then, when I click to download, it says that it's encountered a problem and cannot load the module.

These are probably some sort of "settings"-related problems, but I have no idea how to proceed. Any advice would definitely be appreciated.

hi Mike,

I do not have an answer but a HUNCH!

sounds like your JAVA processing is messed up.
you did not say which browser you are using or if XP Home or Pro

IF you use Internet Explorer, then, under the ADVANCED tab there is a section labeled Microsoft VM,
my Windows XP Home edition works fine with the third box
(JIT compiler for virtual machine) is checked.

a JAVA problem should be able to be resolved by getting the
'..compiler..' installed by MicroSoft or by SUN systems. The
webmaster for the one of the problems will likely resolve your
problem with both of them.

good luck

Mike, if you have Norton or other firewall and Internet security, turn it off when you attempt to log-in to Pinnacle, Bettehorse, YOUBET and others. Otherwise they won't load entirely.

Norton has a feature you can click from the task bar "Disable Internet Security" and select the 5 minutes disable. Once into Pinnacle and others, you can turn the Norton back on "enable" and everything will continue to work.

Mike-
also, the next time you are out getting race files, the screen that starts with Hold your Horses...has instructions as to how to update your Java Virtual Machine. I personally do not have any problems with YouBet and Norton working together, but then again about 6 months ago I read that screen and went to the site stated and updated my Java VM.
Let us know if any of this helps!

2nd post, and life is a whole lot better.

I had to search around and do a manual download from the Sun Microsystems site, but I've got it working. FYI, it looks like MS is phasing out support for the JVM (there was no "Microsoft VM" section in the Securities tab in Explorer). No, you have to search around and download it yourself.

All the advice below helped...I had to know where to start looking and managed to muddle my way thru.

Thanks a bunch.

Glad you were able to get it working mike.

It's a minefield out there.

How come I have no firewall and no antivirus and I'm still here?

Vic--
Please tell me you are joking!

Donnie---

I'm not.

I don't reccomend this to everyone, since I'm running Win 98 SE, but even beyond that, where's the trust? :)

ok, now I am joking.

I think I've "bulletproofed" this Win98 SE baby . . .

I now have AVG anti-virus plus firewall.

Bear in mind, this "antique" machine only has a 4GB hard drive,

so I just purchased (as an emergency measure) a 40GB external hard-drive and copied my two main DBs' over to it.

Just to be sure Donnie. :)

<whew!> Now I can sleep again, Vic. Just outta curiousity, how many viruses did AVG find? Also you may want to download and install Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, both free out at www.download.com

Then, just for fun, download and install Spy Sweeper made by Webroot. You can get a 30 day free trial at the same website (download.com). Would be curious as to the total number of elements all of these return from your system!

Donnie,

I've been using Ad-aware and Spybot for years. Also have CWshredder, CCleaner, Advanced System Optimizer, PestPatrol, and Atomic Clock Sync :)

I'm clean! I run each of these periodically.

Here's why I needed more space, this computer is currently running with only 134MB of free disk space!

That's right, 3% free space. In the past, I've deleted years of data and databases because I had no room for them. This new drive puts a stop to that. Plus, when I do get a new computer, I can transfer data from the external drive, and now and later it provides a safe and portable place.

I'm even finding I can operate my Access databases from within the external drive pretty well. I'm surprised because all I have is USB 1.1

I have been told that Win 98 SE is less prone to virus problems and spyware than XP.

I have done all reccomended MS Critical Updates for my operating system, which I definitely think helps.
