using a sterile computer that is not on my network but does have internet access would allow me to test the links, scan the system and know whether the site is a "trojan loader" or not....although I would imagine most links posted would lead to verifiable, valid sites. I am always up for a good challenge anyway. I am now working towards my A+ Certification....this would always help!

Donnie,

Belated Happy New Year to you and Sue.

I think link checking is a wonderful idea. My Ad-Watch software has alerted me to many situations when a website has tried to install stuff on my PC without my knowledge.

By the way, it is estimated that 80% of the home computers are infected with some form of spyware or trojanware.

Good luck on your certification trail.

Thanks for the kind words, Herman. You know, I think of you often....everytime I scroll down the phone list on my cell phone, there you are! (from last years seminar you are still programmed in there!)

That is a remarkable number (80%)....is it not?!
Worst part is most people don't realize they are infected. Imagine how much spam would be cut down if everyone tested their systems and kicked the junk out of them?!

Hope all is going well with your new screaming computer....and your family! Are we gonna see you next week in Vegas? If not, hopefully you will get a chance to join us again in July.

Be well. Win big!

Boy you guys are rignt on about this..

I can randomly choose any hour of the day to run my spyware killer, and it almost always turns up something. Part of our lives now, I guess, like germs.

Porn and off-shore gambling sites are the worst offenders by far, but even Yahoo, Google and other popular sites send out lots of crap - no wonder they seemlngly operate for free.

...if you are not running both Spybot and Ad-Aware, at a minimum, then you are prone to spyware, malware and tracking software. I am currently working on a project for the State of Iowa. I will be teaching basic computer security to as many of their State employees as we can hit. Once I have the Powerpoint show done, I will post it up here for anyone who has questions or concerns about their privacy, or lack there of. Both of those programs can be found at www.download.com . They are free for personal use. Be sure to update them before running them. Update them frequently. In Spybot be sure to go to Advanced mode, click the immunize button on the left side, and it will keep over 2000 programs from being loaded onto your machine in the first place!

More to come.....

(Oh, Ken...stay off the porn sites....I figured your mother would have warned you about those "bad" girls!)

Donnie, I love my new hummer. It's a Dell 8400 with a 3.2ghz processor, 512 megs of fast ddr2 memory (supposed to process like 1 gig of memory), and a couple of hundred gigs of storage. Processing a day's HTR files with results took maybe 4 to 5 minutes on my old (PIII - 450) now takes 20 to 30 seconds! But it doesn't pick anymore winners that the old system! I sent in a complaint to Dell, but I haven't heard from them yet :D

I don't think I will be in Vegas next week. I just got back (visiting my daughter in Vegas for the holidays) a couple of weeks ago, and don't think I can do the quick turn around. This summer, YES!!

Good luck to TEAM HTR!!
