In the last 3 months we have been hearing from more and more users that get an error message when they try to update the HTR2.exe latest version. Most have prefaced their messages telling me that they have installed "MS Service Pack2" , have multiple security sofware running, or just bought a new computer. Microsoft is at the root of all evil and everyone is aware of it, even novice computer users!

The common error message is "Win32 application not recognized" when they click the binoculars HTR2 after downloading the upgrade. 100% of the problems are coming from Internet Explorer. If you are using Netscape, AOL, Firefox, etc, let me know if you have also had this problem.

Typical solution is as follows:

1) Turn off the computer and re-boot.

2) Immediately, go to the Internet (before doing anything else after the re-boot) and download the HTR2.exe update. Be sure the destination "SAVE IN" folder is c:\HTR

3) Click "yES" to overwrite the previous version.

4) Re-boot the computer and try to run the new HTR2 version from the binocs icon.

This usually solves the problem. If this fails to run the update, then try the following -

1) Click START / CONTROL PANEL / ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS

2) Remove or Uninstall HTR, HTR2, or HTR2001, however it is listed.

3) Go to this website homepage and click on the DEMO (SEtup.exe). Click RUN (not SAVE)
and allow it to continue and install with NEXT, OK and FINISH clicks.

4) DO NOT run the HTR2.exe. Instead DELETE it.

5) To Delete HTR2.exe, click MY COMPUTER, click C: drive; click HTR folder, then locate the HTR2.exe (binoculars) on the list. Highlight the file and right-click on it, click DELETE.

6) Now return here (www.htr2.com) and go to the download area. Download the updated version HTR2.exe.

Sometimes, the first time you get a new update, you may receive a pop-up box that says "HTR2 Not Recognized as Win app - Do you want to continue?". This is a security protection: click RUN or YES.

I'll be updating HTR2.exe in February with a number of new features, wanted everyone to be aware of potential problems. I have been trying to update the DEMO with the latest version, but it is giving me fits. More MS pain ahead, not less.

Webmaster Rick - we'll retain this message on a sticky until after the next update, then we'll package into an permanent article for the "Library". Hopefully we'll get some feedback and be able to offer more solutions.

Service pack 2 caused the sound in my Toshiba laptop to quit working. When I called Toshiba, they suggested deleting service pack 2 and that solved the problem. I assume someday they
make a new driver that will work.

hey KM here is my HUNCH

this problem is related to new XP feature COMPATIBILTY

try this:

A. change ShortCut COMPATIBILTY for Windows 98
B. change Program COMPATIBILTY for Windows 98
C IF not resolved, then repeat using Windows 95

Sure the SP2 may be the APPARENT source of the problem
but, I feel that SP2 just exposed the real problem
with the COMPATIBILTY feature of XP

yes, a great feature BUT anything new will have bugs!!

IF someone uses this HUNCH and it works
THEN, would you post a note about result
THEN, Duane might get an ATTA-BOY (yup it worked)
or a BrainFart award (aah, did NOT work)

That was a good guess Duane, but won't have any effect. Here is what MS writes about the Compatibility Wizard =

"Most programs run properly on Windows XP. The exceptions are some older games and other programs that were written specifically for an earlier version of Windows. To run your program on Windows XP, try the Compatibility Wizard...."

HTR2 was created with the XP operating system and compiled with XP parameters. Most users have had Windows XP for quite awhile (pre-Service Pack 2) and this problem never appeared. The error occurs only with computers running SP2 and Internet Explorer and has popped up just since last November.

The re-boot or delete solutions have worked for every user so far; which are nothing more than an end-around on the security feature.

Tomcat-
Don't hold your breath...many companies have chosen NOT to create new drivers to support XP...they feel it may be time for you to upgrade!
