I understand every query should include xfin and xwin as a field, however should they always be left blank in the criteria line?

It all depends on what you are doing. If you are using the ROI Report they should be left blank.

You should open the ROI report in design view and look at the formulas in there. There are formulas that total how many winners there were that met your criteria and formulas that total up how many horses met your criteria.

If you were doing a query to find out how many horses that met your criteria ran 1st, then you should put the 1 criteria under xFIN and do a count on that. But I can't think of any reason to try and run a ROI Report on it.

All that said, it does a person good to experiment and try ideas out. Of course it is a good idea to know what kind of results you expected. Always check to see that you are getting what you expected to get.
