View Full Version : Explore problem??

Wonder if someone knows the answer to a couple of questions
I downloaded racefiles, results and charts for June11-30 to HTR and opened HTR to add results. When I go to C:\htr to open those files (so I can copy to CD and move to my laptop) I get a searchlight moving right and left over a folder without stop. There are 200MB. Is that somehow too large for explore to handle?
I copied files to a CD on one computer which reads them, but when I try to read the CD on another computer it doesn't see them. Is that the wrong type disc, or what?

A couple things to try....
The first thing I would do is check the newly burned CD to see if you can see the files on the PC that they were created on. It could be a 'bad burn'.
If your laptop's cd drive is older, it may have some compatablity issues. Try burning the data at a lower speed - maybe 8 to 12 X (some older cd drives have a lower maximun read speed).
Also, remember - all files burned to a CD are done in a 'read only' mode. If the files on the laptop won't open (I don't know if HTR will open 'read only' files) you will have to change the file status (attribute). This happens frequently when a Word or Excel document is burned and then tried to open for modification.
Good luck.

Z...
you'll find the whole process easier if you go out and buy a USB memory stick. I gave up on the CD compatibility issue a long time ago.

How do theses sticks work?
You just plug them into a USB port and then copy files both ways?
How much do they hold?
Thanks.

Brown...I beleive you can get them as "big" as a gig of info. The size tho can be relatively small (the size of a pack of chewing gum). You plug it into any USB port on your computer, and the computer will automatically recognize the addition of this new "drive". And it trully does work just as if you have added a drive to your computer. You can move files onto it, save to it, etc. Well worth the price.

hi Zim,
glad to see that have a solution for you by buying a memory stick.
I would like to know if you tried the '..would not read..' CD on the original computer that created the CD?
As pointed out by others, there are MANY ways something can go wrong with burning a CD.
Just as my other questions are:
1. was the CD almost full
--ie, the when CD are burned, an almost full CD will likely fail on another computer.
this is where the CD burn rate is SOMETIMES a solution to the problem.
2. did the CD burn software report ANY buffer overrun.
---ie, the more professional CD software will gracefully recover from this common problem
whereas SOME software will just abort and leave the user THINKING the burn was done.
aaah, yes, there are other questions and since you have your answer, Awol does not expect you to reply with answers for the above questions. Just my techie twitch (sp) needed to be scratched.

re: SEARCHLIGHT when open HTR
I have a hunch about this and added this to my task list for WHEN I get HTR installed.
IF my hunch is correct, I will post a reply.
IF my hunch is wrong, then Awol accepts that was just an BrainFart and not reply.

Thanks for your thoughts. Here's what I think may have happened.
1-I used Microsoft's WRITE TO CD limited program instead of Roxio
2-My CD burn rate (if that's the right word) was old/slow = 24. I got a new bay--they're pretty cheap--with a 52 rate
3-CD had about 200MB on it--so I don't think that contributed
4-Even with all that files may have been corrupted
