For the past 6 months I've been keeping rudimentary NYRA trainer records by hand. Keeping track of trainers winning off layoffs, shipping in, paying $15 or more as well as trainers
losing at short odds overall (8-5 and under) and those losing at 4-1 and under with layoffs and shippers. Trainers who's horses disappoint when well-meant are good bet againsts. It's mainly a short-term trend type of thing -- keeping track of cold and hot streaks and hopefully I'll find seasonal results too.
I like to note info like distance, surface, jockey, class, post position and trip note.

It takes almost 2 hours a week by hand using the DRF Simulcast Weekly. Could I do this in minutes with HTR and Excel? (I don't have Access).

Thanks

Yes.
Do your exports, then just open the files with Excel:

1. Open Excel
2. Select File>Open
3. Select the HTR directory
4. Select File type = text
5. Select the "Deliminated" radio button
6. Hit Next
7. Check comma as the delimiter
8. Select Date for the fist column-the date column
9. Select the date format you prefer to use.
10. Select Finish.

Now you can sort by trainer, date, track, etc. etc.
This is how I do my FTS stuff I posted a while ago - I just exported the data from Access to Excel in this manner-I am no Access wiz so I use Excel for all my calculations.

One the first menue that pops up, on the left hand side there is a choice of "delimited" or "fixed width"-choose delimited, then hit next, and you then select comma as the dlimiter.
