AT THE RACES, the nation’s most innovative software tool for odds researchers, now sports a new feature that incorporates the insights of the man who may be America’s most little-known handicapping giant, the late Robert Devere.

The new AT THE RACES feature, the Devere Tote Grid, presents bettors with an extraordinary visual take on the ebb and flow of any race’s betting action, minute-by-minute, from the opening of betting to the close.

Successful handicappers have been creating and studying hand-drawn versions of the Devere Tote Grid display for many years. The display translates the betting action for each horse in a race into a graphic treatment that makes trends readily recognizable.

With AT THE RACES, tote watchers can now — for the first time ever — compile their own data on betting trends by printing, or saving to disk, copies of completed Devere Tote Grids for further study. Users can choose which Devere Tote Grids to print or save. Or they can have ATR automate the process, on an unattended computer, for all the races at one or a group of tracks. Whichever way you use it odds are you’ll like it!

The late Robert Devere received little public attention during his life, but this veteran Southern California bettor, notes racing journalist Jay Richards, made an enormous contribution to the art and science of handicapping. In the 1960s and 1970s, Devere developed almost a cult following around tracks in the L.A. area.

"I’ll give you the tools," Devere used to tell his handicapping admirers, "but I’m not going to do your digging for you."

At the track, remembers Jay Richards with a smile, Devere would typically wait until the horses were loaded into the gate, then just a couple of seconds before the gates opened — to prevent anyone from rushing to the windows and killing his odds — he’d announce the horse he figured would win.

"Astonishingly," says Richards, "he seemed to be correct about nine times out of ten."

Richards, who recently retired after ten years as the racing columnist and daily handicapper for Nevada’s largest newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal, directed the adaptation of the Devere Tote Grid for ATR. He met Devere in 1973 and has spent nearly thirty years working with his basic approach to handicapping — with, Richards notes, "increasing success."

"The method Bob Devere discovered and developed transcends by a furlong any other means of winner-selection I've ever seen," adds Richards. "Devere was to horse race betting what Einstein was to science, and I'm glad he's now getting recognition, through AT THE RACES, for unlocking the secrets of winner-selection through the tote board."

A sample of the AT THE RACES implementation of the Devere Tote Grid is available at http://homebased2.com/atr/at_the_races4.htm

ATR version 1.53 is free for registered users and includes a 30-day free trial for new users. ATR can be downloaded at http://homebased2.com/atr/at_the_races.htm

Are there any writings around that give clues as to how Devere analyzed the totes.
Otherwise you can spend hours if not months trying to come up with clues -- if
you are not a veteran tote watcher.

But this seems like an excellent tool. You can track specific trainers and owners
and cross reference to when their longshot plays win. is the betting action early
or late with this barn? Etc. Etc.
